Aussie Goes Yankee! Question about visiting the states?

Finally, my partner and i are heading off on our dream holiday, we are going to visit family in Ireland (coming from Sydney Australia) staying there for 6 weeks then heading off to the states for a further 6 weeks!! So excited, what are some great things to see and do while there? We are going to be in New York on my birthday which is in July, and are also heading to Colorado, Las Vagas, Nashville and hiring a car and driving to Memphis (both think it would be really cool to see Elvis’s hometown, i know its pretty funny! But were excited!!) So were doing all of those really touristy thing’s but what are some great things to do if your a local or just anything different then the usual!???

In NYC, you can get a tour from a local. I’m not sure who does it, but try the NYC visitors info web site. There are also pod casts of interesting tours around the city. They’re all not the usual stuff, and the personally guided ones will, of course, be completely different, since New Yorkers all have their own interests, neighborhoods, and knowledge. I think you can request a particular neighborhood.

For a “harbour cruise” from the southern tip of Manhattan, take the Staten Island Ferry across to Staten Island and back. It’s free, and you get some of the best views of the NYC skyline from the boat.

If you hit the Metropolitan Museum of Art, know that the admission fee is only a “suggested dontation.” You can pay less, or nothing at all, if you assert yourself. Also, don’t miss the Cloisters, way uptown (north). It’s covered by your MMA admission, and is one of the hidden gems of the city.

Contrary to what an answerer above said, Niagara Falls is not particularly convenient to NYC. But you can take the train up there if you want to go–it’s near a full day train trip, I think. It’s up to you if you want to take the time. The US trains are run by Amtrak: http://www.amtrak.com.

If you drive north from Nashville on Interstate 65, you’ll enter Kentucky and find Mammoth Cave National Park. Mammoth Cave is one of the largest cave systems in the world, and one of the most accessible. There are lots of tours of the caves, as well as above ground activities. It’s probably a long day trip from Nashville.

This sounds like a wonderful trip!! I’m jealous!
