Rental car at Vegas airport
Las Vegas on New Year’s Eve – - car or shuttle from airport?
We will be going to Las Vegas for New Year’s and arriving around 6:00 PM New Year’s Eve. Originally, we did not think we would have availability of a car, but that option has come up. Which is a better idea — taking a cab, shuttle, or renting a car? Again, we will be arriving New Year’s Eve and I’m sure street closures will cause traffic delays, thus causing taxi meters to run up. We’ll be staying at the Stratosphere for three nights, so we probably will be needing use of transportation other than to and from the airport.
I think I’m leaning towards renting a car. Is that a smart move? I figure if we’re going to be stuck in traffic, it won’t matter if we’re in a shuttle, cab, or rental car… the only difference is that we won’t be charged time for sitting in traffic in a cab and we’ll have usage of the car at other times, too.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks and Happy New Year!
I’ve gone to Las Vegas 18 times, rented a car about half the time. Having a car while you’re touring the Las Vegas strip is more of an inconvenience than a convenience.
Since you’re staying at Stratosphere, however, I recommend the rental car. The vicinity around Stratosphere is pretty sketchy. And there’s not much in walking distance.
Don’t bother trying to drive from the Bellagio to Caesars Palace or any other short distances like that though. Pick a place on the strip to park, and just leave the car there until you’re ready to leave the strip.
The car is also useful for getting from the north end of the strip to the south end. Venetian is a good place to park because a security guard eyeballs everyone who enters the parking lot. You can walk around Venetian, Palazzo, Wynn, Encore, Treasure Island, Fashion Show Mall… then drive down to MGM Grand or Mandalay Bay and walk around the south strip.
If you want to avoid the Las Vegas Blvd. traffic you can use Industrial Ave. / Dean Martin Drive on the west side and Paradise and Koval on the east side; those streets run parallel to Las Vegas Blvd.
Also… parking is FREE at every Las Vegas strip resort property. The only place on Las Vegas Blvd. that charges for parking is Showcase Mall.

How do I rent a car at Mc Carran Airport Las Vegas without having to pay all the airport & other charges, tax?
All of the car rental Co’s charge almost $ 100.00 for taxes, surcharges, and other fees. How can I rent a car for ten days without some of these charges?
Renting a car at the airport is absurdly convenient. The new Rent A Car Center has large shuttle buses running constantly to and from the airport. Fill out the online form to join the frequent renter programs like Hertz #1 Club and Thrifty Blue Chip. Even if you do not rent frequently it’s worth joining since it doesn’t cost anything and you get to bypass the line at the counter. I was driving away in a rental car in less than 30 minutes after getting off the plane my last trip there.
There is an extra tax added to airport rentals that you don’t pay if you rent from another location but the tax is not that much. Something like 9%. But you can avoid it by renting your car from a Las Vegas Blvd. car rental agency (most hotels have them in the lobby) and returning the car at the airport on your way home. I’ve done that several times.
